A Safeguards Information System (SIS) is a system developed by each country participating in REDD Plus to provide information on how the Cancun Safeguards are being addressed and respected throughout the implementation of REDD Plus activities.
Key Functions of SIS
- Providing transparent and consistent information on how safeguards are addressed and respected
- Supporting the monitoring and evaluation of REDD Plus activities
- Facilitating stakeholder participation and access to information
- Contributing to the Summary of Information (SOI) that parties submit to the UNFCCC
- Ensuring accountability and transparency in REDD Plus implementation
UNFCCC Requirements
Under the UNFCCC, developing country Parties implementing REDD Plus activities are required to develop a national SIS. The SIS should:
- Be consistent with the Cancun Safeguards
- Provide information on how all the safeguards are addressed and respected
- Be transparent and flexible to allow for national circumstances
- Be established at the national level
- Build upon existing systems, where appropriate
