Safeguards Information System (SIS)

A transparent system to provide information on how REDD+ safeguards are being addressed and respected.

Malaysia has submitted its first Report on Summary of Information (SOI) in 2016, demonstrating the country's commitment to transparent reporting on REDD+ safeguards implementation. The Safeguards Information System (SIS) provides the framework for ongoing monitoring and reporting.

The Seven Cancun Safeguards

  • Safeguard A: Actions complement national forest programmes, international conventions and agreements.
  • Safeguard B: Transparent and effective national forest governance structures.
  • Safeguard C: Respect for the knowledge and rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.
  • Safeguard D: Full and effective participation of all relevant stakeholders.
  • Safeguard E: Actions consistent with the conservation of natural forests and biodiversity.
  • Safeguard F: Actions to address the risks of reversals (permanence).
  • Safeguard G: Actions to reduce displacement of emissions (leakage).

Malaysia's Approach

Malaysia has developed its own Safeguards Interpretation (Malaysia's Safeguards Principles, Criteria and Indicators) aligned with the seven Cancun Safeguards, taking into account national circumstances, policies and legal frameworks. The MY-SIS provides the platform for transparent reporting on safeguard implementation.
